Frances has four siblings.

Frances O'Connor describes her hometown
of Perth, Australia as "the most isolated city in the world!"
To top it off, her family lived outside the city, which added to the
remoteness, but forced the intellectually minded O'Connor household
(musician mom, physics professor dad, five kids) to create its own
playground. "There was a lot of land around us, so we spent a lot
of time in our imaginations and being very creative," she says.
After graduating from the Western Australia
Academy of Performing Arts, she appeared in the Australian TV series
"Halifax f.p." and in 1996 made her feature-film debut, playing a
lesbian college student in the independent hit "Love and Other
Catastrophes."
Now, after more well-received but little
known films, her roles opposite Brendan Frasier in Bedazzled,
and in Steven Spielberg's A.I. have launched her into the mainstream.
Next, she appears as Gwendolyn in The Importance of Being Earnest,
with Reese Witherspoon, and Windtalkers, with Nicolas Cage.

"I've had a really good run so far. I've enjoyed

On her Catholic school background... "That's why I'm an actor.
They got repression going, and it's very good for acting."
On acting... "You get to be in a world that is immediately removed
from your own existence. That's just really interesting, I think,
as an actor. And it's very romantic."
